From my shack to yours . . .
As Christmas settles gently over the world again, I find myself drawn back to the glow of the rig, the soft hum of the power supply, and the familiar comfort of a frequency alive with voices. There’s something about this season that makes the airwaves feel a little warmer, a little closer, as if the distance between us shrinks with every CQ.
For many of us, radio has always been more than a hobby. It’s a lifeline, a classroom, a playground, and sometimes even a sanctuary. It’s the place where strangers become friends, where static becomes story, and where—against all odds—signals bounce across oceans and mountaintops to remind us that connection is still possible in a noisy world.
Tonight, as I tune across the bands, I hear the same spirit that first pulled me into this universe:
- The patient Elmer offering guidance to a new operator
- The late‑night ragchew between old friends
- The holiday nets checking in one by one, each voice a small beacon of belonging
- The quiet operator sending out a simple “Merry Christmas” in CW, letting dits and dahs carry what words sometimes can’t
And I’m reminded that amateur radio has always been, at its heart, a celebration of human connection.
This year has brought its share of challenges—equipment lost, storms weathered, projects delayed, and life’s unexpected QRM. But it has also brought resilience, creativity, and the steady reassurance that no matter what happens, there’s always someone out there listening, ready to answer your call.
So to every operator spinning the dial tonight…
To the ones running QRP from snowy cabins…
To the ones checking into holiday nets from warm living rooms…
To the ones repairing antennas in the cold because the sky finally cleared…
To the ones who can’t get on the air this year but still carry the spirit of radio in their hearts…
I’m grateful for you.
May your signals be strong, your noise floor low, and your Christmas filled with peace, hope, and the quiet joy of knowing you’re part of something bigger than yourself—a worldwide family stitched together by curiosity, kindness, and a shared love of the airwaves.
From my shack to yours:
Merry Christmas, 73, and may the coming year bring clear frequencies and new horizons.
